Adjustable beds describes bed frames and mattress systems that be elevated at the head and the foot. They are a distant relative of hospital beds, but do not have the amount of adjustments, safety and costs associated with beds intended for the professional healthcare industry. Nonetheless, there are tremendous health benefits from adjustable bed sets.

Most of the adjustable beds marketed by the mattress companies are built by adjustable bed manufacturers to the specification of the mattress companies, and have matching fabrics. The bed generally consists of a central electric motor drive that powers both head and foot mechanisms used for raising and lowering.

There are some models out there like the “wall hugger” by Leggett & Platt that maintain the user in the same lateral position when elevated. That is, the position of the bed night stand will be the same for the user when the bed is either flat or elevated. Another nice feature in modern adjustable bases is the wireless remote.

Not all mattresses are suitable for adjustable application. Most manufacturers make a line of mattresses just for this purpose. The coils and border must function well in different positions. Visco (memory foam) and latex mattresses often work very well for this application, providing they are not too thick. (Typically under 11”). However, these mattresses are designed for very rigid bases in the sleeping position, so please check the adjustable base to make sure it does not have a spring or tick overlying foam pad.
